Step by Step - Luigi

Description

I recently was requested by :icongiorgakis132: if he could draw Luigi in my Kingdom Hearts style, and when I saw how it looked when it finished, which I was flattered by, I also noticed he had done a step by step drawing.

Well, I've seen them all the time, so why not try it myself? So here we go!

Tools used: Paint Tool SAI - Wacom Bamboo tablet

Step 1 - Basic Outline - Whenever it comes to a tricky pose, I always use the wire frame to position how the body will look. I don't really spend too much time doing this, as I usually skip straight to step 2...

Step 2 - Outline - I like to work in layers...and I mean a LOT of layers. So with the wire frame figured out, I set the current layer to a transparency setting of 20% and pop open a new layer. I ALWAYS start with the eyes. I don't have the ability to start from the foot or hand or anything, mostly because my proportions get screwed up...so I always start with the eyes if I can.

If not, then I start with the nose. But I always start with the head area. At this point most of the basic body shapes are made, with the hands being the most troublesome...which is why I make more basic shapes when constructing them.

Step 3 - Filling In - I start putting the clothes on the character, starting with the shirt and working my way down. Any kind of item the character is also holding is created at this stage...though since I can't draw straight lines, I like to use the LINE tool to help me create the length of items such as swords and pencils and the like. I also start cleaning up the outline, erasing any of the guidelines I used in the previous step.

Step 4 - Lineart - One of the longest steps for me in SAI is the lineart....DEFINITELY the lineart....I tend to be super stiff when it comes to proportions and how arms and legs look...and don't even get me started on the hands and fingers....

:iconomgnoesplz:

Step 5 - Flats - At this stage I just start filling in colors for the character. I like to use references whenever I pick out colors, but when it comes to this version of Luigi, I think I've drawn him enough times to just pick a color and run with it. XD

Step 6 - Shading - Once all the flats have been selected and the entire image has been gone over to make sure I didn't miss any spots, it's time to start shading! Honestly, this is by far my favorite part of the drawing. This is where I can really get those flat colors to POP! and bring the character to life. I also like to put in any effects at this point, such as glowing spheres or secondary light sources.

Step 7 - Backgrounds - I'll be honest, at this point I wish I could just go back to the coloring part and stay there, but they don't pop as well if you don't have a good background....AND I HATE/STINK AT DOING BACKGROUNDS......seriously, I can never get them to look "Right" or anything....it's really disheartening....

So usually I'm left with an awesome colored character and a horrible background....which, I guess, is just my style. XD

So there's ya go, a tutorial of how I draw my characters. Now granted, I've learned over the past few years of watching people like :iconnintendrawer: and :iconsuzuran:, so I'm not the only one who got me here today.

So yeah, there all of you fans go!
